MEC LEHARI ORDERS URGENCY AND COMPLIANCE TO COVID-19 DIRECTIVES



The MEC for the Department of Community Safety and Transport Management, Mr. Sello Lehari on (Wednesday, 18 March 2020) urgently convened senior management of the department. The meeting dealt with departmental plans on how to implement the President Ramaphosa and national directives regarding the COVID -19 outbreaks.

President Cyril Ramaphosa on 15th March 2020, declared Corona Virus, COVID 19, a National Disaster. Premier Prof Tebogo Mokgoro also held a briefing on 18th March 2020, and outlined concrete plans that the province is undertaking in respect of combating the spread of the virus.

MEC Lehari urged senior managers of the Department to align the plans with the National and Provincial Governments’ Disaster Management plans which Premier Mokgoro established. The North West provincial Disaster Management team responsibility is to manage and combat the spread of COVID-19.

The Head of Department, Mme Botlhale Mofokeng said among others the DCSTM would urgently heighten awareness programs for both staff and external stakeholder. Procurement of gloves, face masks and sanitizers for use by workers at Pilanesberg International Airport. Pilanesberg Airport has received 17 international and five domestic visitors since Monday. However, the expected international flight from Switzerland has been redirected to OR Tambo International Airport for landing.

Furthermore the MEC said several licensing and vehicle registration centers are ordered to operate on cashless bases. “We are hereby encouraging our citizens to use Electronic Funds Transfer, EFT or speed points to pay for any service since most of our operating centers have the facility. We are also pleading with our people not to wait till very late to renew driving licenses, permits and vehicle registration to avoid overcrowding at our Vehicle Registering Centers and Testing Stations” Said Honorable Lehari. MEC Lehari will on Friday, 20th March 2020, be accompanied by the HoD and senior management to meet stakeholders like South African National Small Bus Operators Council (SANSBOC) and taxi operators, respectively in Rustenburg.

Mass departmental meetings and activities remain postponed until further notice, owing to President's call to limit contacts and potential spread of the virus.

The MEC also appealed to people to avoid the spread of fake news. “Our people should verify any information they receive before sharing it because it has potential to cause unnecessary panic and stigma”. Warned MEC Lehari.
